Numbers of International Students Down at Many Colleges

The number of international students in the United States dropped by nearly 14,000 to 572,509 in the 2003-04 school year, the most recent year for which numbers are available, according to the Nov. 10 Democrat and Chronicle article “Foreign students fewer at U.S. colleges.” The story quoted from “Open Doors 2004,” an annual report released by the Institute of International Education with support from the U.S. State Department, which said this is the first drop in foreign enrollments in more than 30 years.

However, Hobart and William Smith Colleges' numbers of international students are up, boosting the diversity on campus. State University College at Brockport and Nazareth College also have not seen declines in their international student population.
