Hobart senior Tommy Hayes scored the game-winning goal 1:40 into overtime to lead the Statesmen soccer team to a 1-0 win over host Ithaca in a non-conference game played at the Bombers’ Higgins Stadium tonight.
Hobart improves to 10-1-0 overall. Ithaca falls to 2-5-1 this season. In the 92nd minute, Hayes broke the scoreless tie sending a shot just inside the right side of the net to give the Statesmen the win. Junior Ian McGarty set up the play sending a crossing pass in front of the goal. The goal was Hayes’ third of the season. McGarty is tied for the team lead with three assists this fall.
The Bombers’ best scoring chance came in the game’s opening minutes as sophomore Nick Murad beat Hobart defenders for a one-on-one with the Statesmen’s keeper, senior Alex Witherell. Murad’s shot was punched away by the sliding Witherell, and bounded toward the net. Witherell regrouped and chased down the ball before it crossed the goal line. Witherell stopped all four shots that he faced to earn his first collegiate shutout.
Jordan Gentile stopped five shots in all 91:40 for Ithaca. The Statesmen enjoyed a 17-7 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 8, when the Statesmen host top-ranked St. Lawrence for a Liberty League match beginning at 2 p.m.
