The Hobart hockey team fell to Cortland State 3-2 in its season opener at Cortland’s Alumni Arena tonight. The Red Dragons (1-1) picked up their first win of the season in the non-conference game.
Junior Brad Richard and first-year Tommaso Traversa tallied Hobart’s goals. Junior Cam Miller earned two assists, and sophomore Keith Clarke chipped in with an assist.
After a scoreless first period, Richard gave Hobart a 1-0 lead when he scored from the point off Miller’s pass from behind the net at seven minutes, 38 seconds of the second period.
Just 15 seconds later, Cortland tied up the game. Stephen Nardi tied the score with a slap shot from the point through a screen. Josh LaRose and Erik Nordqvist set up the play. Cortland tacked on two late power-play goals in the period for a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes. At 19:01, Peter Lompado scored on a one-timer off a cross-ice pass from Adam Bevilacqua. Tyler Virgoe also was credited with an assist on the play. Joey Christiano netted a rebound goal 35 seconds later. Michael Lysyj earned the assist.
Cortland had a chance to increase its lead, but Broadwater denied freshman Nick Zappia’s penalty shot that was awarded after one of the Statesmen covered the puck in the crease. Hobart pulled within one, making it 3-2 at the 9:51 mark of the third period when Traversa scored from the slot. It was his first collegiate goal.
The Statesmen pulled junior goalie Nick Broadwater with 30 seconds remaining, but could not find the equalizer. Broadwater finished with 18 saves.
Mike Reilly stopped 23 shots in goal for Cortland. Hobart held a 25-21 edge in shots. The Statesmen were 0-4 on the power-play, while the Red Dragons were 2-for-7.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. when they travel to play Manhattanville in their first ECAC West contest of the season.
