Sophomore Lia Duffy won three events to lead the William Smith swimming and diving team to a 140-97 victory over Alfred in Bristol Pool today. The Herons won nine of the meets 13 events to improve to 2-1, while the Saxons fall to 0-2.
Duffy, who won two events in each of William Smith’s first two meets of the season, picked up her first win today in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 2:22.67, more than three seconds ahead of the runner-up. Victory No. 2 came in the 100 freestyle where her time of 56.53 was 0.38 seconds better than the second place swimmer. Duffy completed her hat trick by clocking in at 1:12.57 in the 100 breaststroke for a comfortable 1.93 seconds victory.
Heron first-year Christine Rhoads continued her impressive start, winning the 200 free (2:05.75) and the 500 free (5:38.47). She also teamed up with junior Amanda Woods, sophomore Mimi Mahoney, and sophomore Sally Storch to capture the 200 free relay in 1:47.22.
Senior diver Kaleigh Fowler emerged victorious on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards for her first wins of the season.
First-year Samantha Burnett also posted a win for the Herons, securing first place in the 100 butterfly in 1:06.55.
For Alfred, Chrissy Behr won the 50 free, while Donna Hoops won the 100 backstroke. Behr and Hoops also teamed with Eryn Matich and Heather Remchuck to win the meet opening 200 medley relay.
William Smith will be back in the pool at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, when the Herons host Cobleskill.
