Brophy Discusses Central Asia

Scott Brophy, professor of philosophy, delivered a talk at the Wood Library in Canadaigua about “Nation Building: Education Reform and Democracy in Central Asia.” Brophy drew upon Ahmed Rashid's new book “Jihad,” as well as his own many trips to the region while working on education reform there as a way to explore the rise of militant Islamicism since the breakup of the Soviet Union and the civic roles of the education system in the newly emerging democracies of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekestan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenestan. The talk was part of “Complements” and “Synapse” series of community lectures, co-sponsored by the Canandaigua School District and the Wood Public library.
