Four different Statesmen scored a goal as the Hobart hockey team held on to defeat Brockport State 4-2 in a non-conference game played this afternoon at The Cooler.
Eleven different Statesmen logged a point in the contest. With the victory, the Hobart is now 7-6-0 overall, while the Golden Eagles fall to 4-8-2 this year.
The first period was evenly played with Brockport State holding a slight 8-7 edge in shots. After Hobart killed two penalties in the first period and another that carried over into the second period, junior Brad Richard capitalized on the first Statesmen power play of the game to put Hobart up 1-0. First-year Ryan Michel and junior Ryan Corcoran set up the goal. It was Richard’s fifth tally this winter.
With 10:19 on the clock, Steve Sachman drilled a hard shot on goal that was saved by Hobart goaltender junior Marty Ausserhofer. The deflection bounced off Ausserhofer’s pads, but was swatted away by a Statesman defender. Ausserhofer finished with 30 saves in all 60 minutes in goal.
At 14:27 in the middle period, senior Rick Longobardi scored his first goal of the season. Passes by junior Harry Radovich and first-year Tommaso Traversa sent the puck up the ice to get Longobardi a one-on-one opportunity with the Golden Eagles goalie, Oliver Wren. Longobardi slid a shot past Wren to give the
Statesmen a two-goal advantage. Hobart out-shot the Golden Eagles 22-11 in the second.
At 11:09 in the final period, sophomore Tommy Fiorentino took advantage of another Hobart power play, and put a shot into the back of the net from right in front of the goal. First-years Bronson Kovacs and Peter Ryan earned the assists. It was Fiorentino’s fourth goal this season.
At 14:44 Brockport State broke through and made it 3-1. Chris Cangro sent a shot from straight on into the goal after passes from Matt DeLuca and Mike Baxter.
The Golden Eagles pulled Wren out of the goal for the extra skater in the final minutes of the third, but senior Greg Ciciola capitalized on the empty net to put Hobart up 4-1. It was his fifth tally of the season. Junior Frank Salituro recorded the assist.
With 30 seconds remaining in regulation, Brendon Ruthfuss scored for Brockport State for the final margin. Nick Panepinto and Matt DeLuca logged the assists.
