The William Smith College basketball team trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, but used a 15-3 finishing run to take a 68-61 Liberty League victory at RIT. Senior forward Kristen Kush paced four Herons in double digits with 14 points.
The sophomore class came up big for the William Smith (6-7, 2-2). Guard Sasha Borenstein had 11 points and four steals, guard Erin O’Brien netted 10 points and a game-high five steals, guard Jacqueline Murphy scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and guard Liz Douglass finished with seven points and five rebounds. Junior guard Jaimie Rubin doled out a game-high eight assists.
For RIT (6-8, 2-3), junior guard Leslie Havens picked up her third double-double of the season, finishing with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Kayla Wheeler grabbed a career-high 14 boards to go with 12 points, while Jackie Hom chipped in with 10 points.
Havens’ layup at the 15:29 mark of the second half gave the Tigers a 46-35 lead, but the Herons came roaring back. Over the next three minutes, William Smith scored 10 unanswered points to make it a one-point game.
Hom made a pair of free throws at the 7:39 mark that put RIT up five, but Rubin countered with a 3-pointer at the other end of the floor launching the Herons on their decisive finishing run. William Smith took the lead for good on a layup by Kush with 94 seconds left and got some breathing room on layups by Douglass and Murphy.
RIT played the final 8:58 of the game without making a field goal, going 0-for-12 from the field.
The Herons shot 42.4 percent from the floor while limiting the Tigers to 35.9 percent. William Smith also forced 22 RIT turnovers while committing just 10. The Tigers outrebounded the Herons 50-35.
The Herons will be back in action at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, when they host Vassar.
