Hobart College junior guard Stefan Thompson became the 24th Statesmen to reach the 1,000-career point plateau, leading his team to a 66-43 Liberty League victory over RIT tonight. He was 6-of-10 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers for 14 points, raising his career total to 1,001.
Hobart (11-2, 4-0) never trailed in the contest and broke the game open with 12 unanswered points midway through the first half. The Statesmen took a 27-16 lead into halftime. Thompson had seven points at the break, leaving him six away from the career milestone.
The visitors opened the second half on a 12-4 run that put them firmly in control leaving the drama up to Thompson and his pursuit of 1,000. He got all the points he needed in a little over two minutes of game time. Thompson converted a layup at the 9:29 mark that pushed Hobart’s lead to 20. He hit a short jumper in the paint with 7:56 remaining to again make it a 20-point game. Forty-two seconds later, Thompson drained a 3-pointer to surpass the milestone.
Sophomore forward Richie Bonney led the Statesmen with a career-high 23 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Thompson also have game-highs with five assists and three steals. First-year Connor Rehbaum chipped in eight points in just eight minutes of work.
Kurt Fenderbosch led RIT (5-9, 1-4) with eight points and four rebounds.
Hobart shot 49.1 percent from the floor and limited the Tigers to 39 percent shooting. The Statesmen also had the advantage on the glass (33-30) and in turnovers (10-19).
The Statesmen will be back in action at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, when they host Vassar.
