The Hobart College squash team was edged 5-4 by Tufts this morning in its final match of the 2012 Amherst/Mt. Holyoke/Smith Round Robin. The Statesmen are now 10-11 this season.
Seniors Willis Stephens and Kevin Kent picked up 3-0 wins at Nos. 8 and 4, respectively, to give Hobart a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Will Boyle dropped his first two matches 7-11, 7-11 at No. 6, but rallied to win 14-12, 11-3, 12-10 to give the Statesmen a 3-0 advantage.
The Jumbos picked up wins at No. 9 and No. 2 to make it 3-2. Senior Grant Bercari kept Hobart on top with an 11-6, 11-7, 12-10 victory at No. 7. Tufts rallied to secure a four-game win at No. 3 and a 3-0 win at No. 5 to make it 4-4 overall. It all came down to the top spot. Senior Corey Kabot won the first two games 11-7, 11-9. The Jumbos’ Zach Schweitzer picked up a 7-11 win in the third game, but then Kabot got sick and had to default the match.
The Statesmen will be back in action Feb. 1 when they travel to take on Rochester at 6 p.m.
