Hobart College junior goalie Marty Ausserhofer stopped all 20 shots that he faced as the Statesmen defeated Potsdam 4-0 a non-conference game played tonight at The Cooler. It was Ausserhofer’s first career shutout.
Junior Brad Richard tallied two goals for the Statesmen as Hobart improved to 10-7-0 overall. Junior Frank Salituro added two assists. The Statesmen outshot the Bears (6-10-2) 53-20. Potsdam goalie Kevin McFarland stopped 49 shots in all 60 minutes in goal.
After a scoreless first period, Hobart tallied three goals in the second. At 5:56, first-year Ryan Michel sent a go ahead pass to senior Rick Longobardi who buried his shot for his second goal of the season. Just as Potsdam completed killing a 5-on-3, Richard received a pass from Salituro on the point where he released a blistering slap shot that found the back of the net for a power-play goal to make it 2-0 at 12:34.
With just seven seconds remaining in the second period and after a flurry of chances in front of the net sophomore Tom Rush batted the puck out of the air past McFarland for his first goal of the season. First-year Brendan Fitzgerald earned the assist on the Statesmen’s third goal.
With 3:45 remaining in the final period and the Statesmen on a 5-on-3 advantage, Salituro fed Richard at the blue line. Richard drilled home his second of the night and seventh of the season.
The Statesmen played strong defense in the third period, killing five Potsdam power plays. Hobart finished finished 2-for-8 on the power play, and killed all eight of the Bears’ power-play chances.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 27 when they travel to Utica for an ECAC West game beginning at 7 p.m.
