The William Smith College swimming and diving team posted victories in the 200-yard medley relay and 50 backstroke and placed second in five other events to finish second in the Skidmore Sprint Invitational today.
The Herons compiled 211 points, trailing only Vassar (261). Skidmore, Sarah Lawrence, Cobleskill and Bard rounded out the six-team field.
William Smith opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Casey Sherwin, Lia Duffy, Samantha Burnett, and Mimi Mahoney posted a winning time of 1:58.43. Sherwin also led a 1-2 Heron finish in the 50 backstroke. Her time of 30.87 just edged Mahoney’s 31.23. Sherwin turned in a second place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.48.
Mahoney notched her second runner-up finish of the meet in the 50 butterfly, touching the wall in 28.98.
Duffy posted three second place efforts. In the 50 breaststroke, she logged a time of 33.82. She led an impressive 2-3-4-5 finish in the 50 free with a 26.23 and she was the runner-up in the 100 individual medley (1:05.24).
The Herons also produced three third place swims thanks to the efforts of Leah Jacob in the 100 free (59.77), Katie Stebbins in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.12), and the 200 free relay team of Lauren Morosky, Sally Storch, Jacob, and Caitlin O’Brien (1:49.21).
William Smith will be back in the pool Feb 22-25 when the Herons compete in the UNYSCSA Championships.
