The William Smith College basketball team got back in the win column with a 73-57 win at Liberty League rival Clarkson this afternoon. First-year forward Chloe Hayter was perfect from the floor on her way to a season-high 18 points.
William Smith (11-9, 7-4) scored the first six points of the game, but Clarkson (7-12, 2-9) netted the next six. It was the only tie of the contest. Sophomore guard Sasha Borenstein and junior guard Jaimie Rubin drained back-to-back 3-pointers and Erin O’Brien converted a layup for an 8-0 run that put the Herons in front for good. Seven unanswered points midway through the half pushed William Smith’s advantage into double digits.
Shooting 42.9 percent from the floor and committing just two turnovers, the Herons carried a 40-24 lead into halftime. Hayter led all scorers with 10 first half points. She finished the game 7-for-7 from the floor, the best shooting performance by a Heron since Marisa Vespa ’08 was 10-for-10 against Union on Feb. 22, 2008.
In the second half, William Smith extended its lead to as many as 25 and cruised to its fifth straight win over the Golden Knights.
Senior forward Kristen Kush contributed 11 points to the winning effort. Sophomore guard Jacqueline Murphy led the Herons to a 36-34 edge on the boards with a game-high 10 rebounds and eight points. Rubin handed out a career-high matching nine assists to go with six points and six rebounds.
Leighann Tomita scored 11 points for Clarkson and Brooke Butkovsky added 10 points.
William Smith will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 7 when the Herons visit Union. The Liberty League contest is scheduled to tipoff at 6 p.m.
