Statesmen Skate Past Soaring Eagles

Three different Statesmen recorded two points as the Hobart College hockey team avenged last night’s loss to No. 11 Elmira with a 5-4 victory tonight in an ECAC West game played at the Soaring Eagles’ Murray Athletic Center.

First-year Bronson Kovacs recorded a goal and an assist for Hobart (12-10-1, 3-6-1 ECACW). Junior Bobby Hannah scored two goals and junior Frank Salituro notched two assists. Junior Nick Broadwater played all 60 minutes in goal for Hobart and finished with a season-high 36 saves.

Darcy Vaillancourt led Elmira (14-7-2, 7-2-1) with a goal and three assists. Kevin Willer chipped in two assists. Darren McDonald played 58:34 in goal for the Soaring Eagles and made 17 saves.

Just 21 seconds into the contest, John Clewlow put Elmira up 1-0. Vaillancourt earned the assist. At 5:16 Hobart answered with a David Stevens‘ power-play goal. Salituro tallied the assist. Just 55 seconds later, Brendan Sanders took back the lead for the Soaring Eagles. D’Arcy Oakes and Vaillancourt were credited with assists.

At 10:04 in the second, Hannah connected for his first goal of the night to tie the game at two. Salituro set up the play. Junior Brad Richard gave the Statesmen their first lead of the game 1:03 later. Kovacs recorded the assist. It was Richard’s ninth tally this season.

Hobart continued to control things through the start of the third period. At 5:48, Hannah fired a shot past the Elmira netminder for his second goal of the night and sixth this season. First-year Ryan Michel logged the assist. On a power-play at 14:05, Kovacs collected a pass from fellow first-year Terrence O’Neill, and sent a shot home to put the Statesmen up 5-2. It was Kovacs’ third goal as a Statesman.

The Soaring Eagles would not go away quietly. At 15:30, Martin Lee found the back of the net after passes from Vaillancourt and Kevin Willer, cutting Elmira’s deficit to two. With 2:04 left in regulation, Vaillancourt scored his fourth goal this year to put the Soaring Eagles within one. Lee and Willer posted the assists. Elmira pulled McDonald with 1:26 remaining for the extra-skater, but the Statesmen held off the Soaring Eagles’ final push.

Hobart was 2-for-8 on the power-play, and the Soaring Eagles finished 1-for-9.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 16 when they host Manhattanville for another ECAC West game beginning at 7 p.m.
