At 10:04 in the second, Hannah connected for his first goal of the night to tie the game at two. Salituro set up the play. Junior Brad Richard gave the Statesmen their first lead of the game 1:03 later. Kovacs recorded the assist. It was Richard’s ninth tally this season.
Hobart continued to control things through the start of the third period. At 5:48, Hannah fired a shot past the Elmira netminder for his second goal of the night and sixth this season. First-year Ryan Michel logged the assist. On a power-play at 14:05, Kovacs collected a pass from fellow first-year Terrence O’Neill, and sent a shot home to put the Statesmen up 5-2. It was Kovacs’ third goal as a Statesman.
The Soaring Eagles would not go away quietly. At 15:30, Martin Lee found the back of the net after passes from Vaillancourt and Kevin Willer, cutting Elmira’s deficit to two. With 2:04 left in regulation, Vaillancourt scored his fourth goal this year to put the Soaring Eagles within one. Lee and Willer posted the assists. Elmira pulled McDonald with 1:26 remaining for the extra-skater, but the Statesmen held off the Soaring Eagles’ final push.
Hobart was 2-for-8 on the power-play, and the Soaring Eagles finished 1-for-9.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 16 when they host Manhattanville for another ECAC West game beginning at 7 p.m.
