Hobart and William Smith Colleges will again host one of the most competitive debate tournaments in the world this spring. This year marks the strongest field of competitors the Colleges have ever hosted. Of the 16 teams joining the Round Robin, four are former World Champions – and two additional debaters who have been ranked number one in the world.
Joining the Colleges are Cambridge, Stanford, Yale, Cornell, University of Toronto, Oxford, Pretoria, University of Pretoria in South Africa, RV College of Engineering in India, Loyola Marymount, Tel Aviv University, UC Dublin, University of London, and Sydney University.
The Round Robin Invitational at HWS, sponsored through a partnership with the International Debate Education Association (IDEA), will be held from Thursday, April 5 – Saturday, April 7 on the HWS campus with the final debate held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Vandervort Room of the Scandling Campus Center.
In addition to this impressive array of teams, judges of the tournament will come from 13 different nations.
“It is unlikely that any collegiate tournament will surpass the prestige of the World University Debate Championship tournament, but the HWS/IDEA Round Robin seems to be on a fast path to being seen as one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world,” says Associate Professor of Philosophy Eric Barnes, the coach and adviser to the HWS Debate team. “I really hope our students and the rest of our community will take the opportunity to see many of the best debaters in the world, who will be traveling great distances just to compete at HWS.”
