The Hobart College basketball team closed out the regular season with a 69-43 win at Vassar this afternoon. The Statesmen won their sixth in a row and tied the school record for wins in a season, improving to 21-4 overall.
Sophomore Richie Bonney led the Statesmen with game-highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Joe Gibbons scored 14 points and senior Matt Pebole added 11 points and five rebounds. Hobart dominated on the glass to the tune of 41-19. The Statesmen shot 54.8 percent from the floor and made 20-of-27 from the free throw line.
Nicholas Justiz was the only Brewer to record more than five points, making four 3-pointers on his way to 14 points.
Justiz sank a trey with 11:27 remaining in the first half to get the home team within three, but the Statesmen broke the game wide open by scoring the game’s next 10 points and 16 of the next 18. Hobart took a 36-19 lead into halftime.
The Statesmen never let their lead dip below 15 in the second half. Hobart made 12 of the 19 field goals it attemped in the final 20 minutes (63.2%).
Hobart went 14-2 in Liberty League, its best conference record, and enjoyed a three-game cushion over second place Skidmore (11-5). The Statesmen will host Union (16-8, 9-7) on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in the Liberty League Tournament semifinals. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Bristol Gym.
