Anwar Helps Create Indonesian Center

Associate Professor of Religious Studies Etin Anwar and other Indonesian scientists in the United States are in the process of creating an Indonesian and American Center of Excellence “to foster communication between scientists of the two countries.” Anwar is coordinator of the International Indonesian Scientist Association for the American continent. The announcement of the Center was made via a press release that was carried by AsiaPulse and appeared on the websites Scottrade, Alacrastore.com, and Individual.com, among others.

According to the release, “The Indonesian and American Center of Excellence is expected to improve the level of education and research of the Indonesian people through strategic cooperation between the two countries.”

Anwar joined the faculty in 2006. She received her bachelor’s degree in comparative religion from the State Institute for Islamic  Studies in Bandung, Indonesia, and earned her master’s in Islamic studies from McGill University, and went on to receive her Ph.D. in philosophy, interpretation and culture from SUNY Binghamton, where she also received a certificate in feminist theory.

According to the release, “The Indonesian and American Center of Excellence is expected to improve the level of education and research of the Indonesian people through strategic cooperation between the two countries.”

Indonesian Scientists to Form Center of Excellence in U.S.

Indonesian scientists in the United States are setting up an Indonesian and American Center of Excellence to foster communication between scientists of the two countries.

This was stated by Etin Anwar, Associate Professor at Hobart and William Smith College in the United States, who is also Coordinator of the International Indonesian Scientist Association (I-4) for the American continent, Antara in London said Wednesday.

For that purpose I-4, PERMIAS DC, and the Indonesian American Association (IAA) will hold a Workshop with the theme “Bridging International Cooperation in Research and Education Between Indonesia and USA”.

The workshop supported by the Indonesian embassy in Washington DC is to boost real cooperation between Indonesian scientists and their American counterparts in research and education.

The Indonesian and American Center of Excellence is expected to improve the level of education and research of the Indonesian people through strategic cooperation between the two countries.

The work shop is also aimed at fostering communication between the scientists of the two countries and would later increase the level of education and research of the Indonesian people by way of a strategic cooperation between the the two countries, Etin Anwar said.

Dr. Rizal Hariadi who is also a doctorate scholar at the University of Michigan said this workshop is the first activity of I-4 in the US since it was set up three years ago.

It is also expected this activity would contribute to the advancement of education and research in Indonesia.

The event which will be held on March 16 and 17,2012 at the University of Maryland will invite speakers like Prof. Yohanes Surya, Prof. Fasli Jalal, Prof. Usman Rianse, Prof. Yow Pin Lim and Dr. Nelson Tansu.

While the American speakers include Peter McPherson (President of the Association of State and Land-grant Universities), Ellis Rubenstein (President and CEO of the New York Academy of Science), and Prof. Tom Chapman of the National Science Foundation.

The Indonesian Education Attache in the US Dr. Haryo Winarso said this activity is in line with the Comprehensive Partnership between Indonesia and the US.
For this the Indonesian embassy fully supported this workshop, as it could be used as an entry to supporting the formation of the Center of Excellence in Indonesia, he said.
