Hobart Tennis Tops St. Olaf

The Hobart College tennis team defeated St. Olaf 6-3 in a match played this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 3-0 on the spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C.

Hobart improves to 7-2 overall this season. This afternoon, the Statesmen came out of doubles action with two points. Junior Alex James and junior Sam DeLuccia defeated their St. Olaf opponents 8-5 at No. 2. Senior Walter Green and senior Kevin Bates topped their opposition 8-2 at No. 3.

In singles action, junior Bruce Grant and DeLuccia rose to the occasion to win their singles matches in third set super tie breakers. Grant won 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 10-4 at the top spot, and DeLuccia triumphed 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 at No. 2. First-year Michael Fields cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 5. He improved his season record to 8-1. At No. 6, Green earned a 6-4 win in his first set, and was down 4-0 in his second set but rallied to win it 6-4 win. It’s his fourth victory this season. Green is riding a five-match win streak that began back on May 1, 2011 against St. Lawrence.

The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, March 21 when they take on Centre in their fourth match of their spring break trip at 11:30 a.m.
