The William Smith tennis team defeated Calvin 9-0 this afternoon to post a perfect 3-0 record on their spring break trip. The Herons swept all three of their opponents in Florida, and improved to 4-1 overall.
Senior Joanie Hilton and junior Kiara Ocasio cruised to an 8-1 victory at the top doubles spot. The duo improved their doubles record to 4-1 at No. 1 this season. Seniors Casey Kennedy and Katie Serock paired up for an 8-4 win at No. 2, and juniors Hallsey Leighton and Remy Raevsky earned an 8-3 triumph at No. 3.
In singles action, Kennedy led the Herons picking up her sixth singles victory of the year, defeating Megan Visser 6-0, 7-5 at No. 1. Ocasio also notched her second win of the afternoon and seventh this season, edging her Calvin opponent 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). Hilton topped Jodan Ipema 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 to improve her singles mark to 12-2 overall. Leighton dropped her first set 4-6 at No. 4, but rallied for 6-1, 10-7 victories in her next two sets. It was her third win this year. Sophomore Casey Nicoletti picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5, and first-year Haley Wolf downed her competition 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6. Nicoletti is now 8-3 in singles, and Wolf’s record stands at 7-2.
The Herons will be back on the courts on Sunday, March 25 when they host Wells at the HWS Tennis Center at 12 p.m.
