The Hobart College tennis team blanked St. Lawrence 9-0 in a match played this afternoon at Bristol Field House. The Statesmen improved to 9-3 overall.
Hobart was ranked No. 16 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Region rankings. St. Lawrence is now 1-11 this season.
Seniors Kevin Bates and Walter Green picked up the Statesmen’s first win with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles. Junior Alex James and senior Matt Hursh followed with an 8-5 win at No. 2, and junior Bruce Grant and first-year Michael Fields logged an 8-4 triumph at the top spot.
Junior Sam DeLuccia cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles. Green secured the overall victory for Hobart with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5, extending his win streak to eight matches. James earned his second win of the day at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2. Hursh defeated St. Lawrence’s Tom Luchars 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4. Grant dropped his first set 7-6, but rallied to win his next two 6-3, 10-4. Fields rounded out the Hobart sweep with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 6.
The Statesmen will host New York University tomorrow, April 1 in Bristol Field House at 1 p.m.
