William Smith senior Lucy Johnson, junior Kathleen Ragan and senior Kathryn Gillan shared a game-high with five points each as the Heron lacrosse team defeated Bard College 20-2 in a Liberty League contest played this afternoon on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation.
Johnson and Ragan each recorded four goals and an assist, and Gillan logged two goals and three assists in the victory. Johnson and Ragan shared a game-high with three ground balls, and Gillan won a game-high four draw controls. William Smith is now 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League.
Senior Christine Abramo scored two goals and earned an assist. Senior Rosie Scheibel, senior Megan Brophy, junior Katie Dexter, first-year Megan Robson and first-year Abbie Westall recorded two points each. Sophomore Maggie McNair played the opening 44:18 and stopped six shots. Sophomore Rachel Fippinger came in to play the final 15:42 and made one save.
The game marked the first-ever meeting between the Herons and Bard. The Raptors are now 4-3 overall and 0-2 in league play. Joanna Regan led Bard with a goal, an assist and two caused turnovers. Victoria Fleisher also scored for the Raptors. Brianna Bean and Jessica Philpott shared a game-high with three ground balls. Maddy Huggins played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with three saves.
The Raptors scored first just 1:20 into the game. Regan scored her team-leading 19th goal of the year to give Bard what would be its only lead of the game. The Herons responded with 16 unanswered goals before halftime. Johnson started the scoring spree for William Smith at 1:54 in the first. Ragan found the back of the net to make it 2-1, and then Johnson notched back-to-back tallies to give the Herons a 4-1 just 4:08 in.
Sipple scored her sixth of the season at 4:26. A little under a minute later, Scheibel recorded her team-leading 14th goal of the year off an assist from Sipple. Twelve seconds later, Ragan sent home a shot after a feed from Gillan. Johnson netted her fourth of the day and 10th this year to make it 8-1. At 10:36, Gillan sent a short pass across the front of the net to Dexter who fired a low shot past the Raptor keeper to give the Herons an eight goal lead. Gillan registered back-to-back tallies, and first-year Hayley Braun followed with her first collegiate goal to make it 12-1. At 19:28, Abramo sent a bouncing shot into the back of the net. Goals by first-years Robson, West and Molly McElgunn gave William Smith a 16-1 lead going into the break. It was McElgunn’s first goal as a Heron.
With back-to-back goals by Ragan in the opening 2:55, William Smith built its lead to 17. At 23:05 in the second, Fleisher tallied her third goal this season off an assist from Regan to make it 18-2. West recorded her second goal of the day, and Abramo notched her second of the afternoon with 46 seconds remaining for the final margin.
William Smith held a 29-14 advantage in shots and an 18-15 edge in ground balls. The Herons won 16 draw controls, while Bard came away with seven. William Smith went 9-for-15 on clear attempts, and the Raptors were 3-for-11.
The Herons will be back in action on Thursday, April 5, when they take on No. 3 Cortland at 5 p.m. on Boswell Field.
