The Hobart tennis team swept doubles play and cruised to an 8-1 victory today over the University of Rochester in a match played on the indoor courts in Bristol Field House at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation. The Statesmen are 2-0 against the Yellowjackets this season.
Hobart, who is ranked No. 16 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Region Rankings, defeated Rochester 6-3 back on Sept. 11, 2011 in the 2011 Flower City Invitational. The Statesmen improve to 12-3 this season. With their 12th victory, Hobart has surpassed its 11-win total from last year.
Junior Alex James and senior Matt Hursh picked up the Statesmen’s first triumph of the afternoon edging their opposition 9-7 at No. 2 doubles. Seniors Kevin Bates and Walter Green followed with an 8-6 win at No. 3, and junior Bruce Grant and first-year Michael Fieldssecured the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory at No. 1. Grant and Fields lead Hobart with a 7-3 doubles record this year.
James notched his second win of the day at No. 2 singles downing Rochester’s Alex Magill 6-2, 6-3. Fields topped Joel Allen 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5 to clinch the match victory for Hobart and notch his fourth straight singles win. Fields leads the Statesmen with a 13-2 record this season. Grant topped Brian Rice 6-4, 6-4 at the top singles spot. Junior Sam DeLucciadropped his first set 6-4, but rallied to win the next two 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3. The Yellowjackets earned their only win of the day at No. 4, and Hursh defeated Rochester’s Jonathan Lieb 6-3, 6-0 to round out the Statesmen lineup.
Hobart will be back in action when it hosts RIT on Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m.
