Senior Rosie Scheibel scored a game-high six goals and earned an assist to lead the William Smith lacrosse team to an 18-12 victory over visiting Clarkson in a Liberty League game played today on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation.
The Herons improved to 6-7 overall and 5-1 in the Liberty League. The Golden Knights are now 5-7 and 1-5 in the conference.
First-year Abbie West notched five goals in the win and scooped up three ground balls. Senior Lucy Johnson scored three goals and won a team-high five draws. Junior Kathleen Ragan scored two goals and added two assists. Senior Callie Frelinghuysen chipped in a goal and three assists. She added two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior Kathryn Gillan picked up a team-high five ground balls. Sophomore Maggie McNair played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons and turned aside 11 shots.
Katie VanDeValk led Clarkson with four goals and won a game-high eight draw controls. Saryn Campbell and Alyssa Cristaldi each tallied three goals and an assist. Alyssa Dausman contributed a goal and an assist as well as a game-high six ground balls. Hannah Walters played the whole game in net for the Golden Knights and stopped 10 shots.
Just 11 seconds into the game, Scheibel found the back of the net to give William Smith a 1-0 lead. The Golden Knights responded with three straight goals, but Scheibel struck again, this time with back-to-back goals to tie the game at three. At 11:39, Dausman scored off an assist from Campbell, but goals by Johnson and Scheibel 29 seconds apart gave the Herons a 5-4 lead. Campbell scored her 26th goal of the season at 16:32, but once again the Herons answered with goals from Scheibel and West to make it 7-5. With 4:27 before the break, VanDeValk notched her second of the afternoon to make the score 7-6 at halftime.
Fifty-two seconds into the second half, Ragan notched an unassisted tally, and at 1:04 Johnson grabbed a draw control and ran down and drilled a low shot into the back of the net to make it 9-6. Just 1:07 later, West scored her second of the day to give the Herons a four goal advantage. Clarkson would not go away quietly. Goals by VanDeValk and Cristaldi cut their deficit to two at 8:28.
However, the Herons started to really pull away with a 6-1 run that made it 16-9. West notched three goals in the spurt including back-to-back goals to cap the run. Sophomore Hannah Schickel, Frelinghuysen and Scheibel each recorded a goal and an assist. Ragan tallied two assists.
With 7:24 remaining, Laura Barlow took advantage of a free position, and Campbell followed with her second goal of the day to make the score 16-11. Frelinghuysen fed Ragan, who registered her 28th goal of the season to put William Smith back up by six. Cristaldi sent home a shot with 3:17 left in regulation, but Johnson scored her 27th goal of the season with 10 seconds remaining for the final.
The Herons enjoyed a 46-26 advantage in shots and a 27-22 edge in ground balls. William Smith was successful on 15-of-18 clear attempts, while Clarkson finished 12-for-22. The Herons also held a 17-15 lead in draws.
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, April 21, when they host St. Lawrence for another Liberty League contest beginning at 3 p.m.
