The Hobart and William Smith sailing team placed sixth out of 18 teams at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Eastern Semifinals in Annapolis, Md., this weekend. HWS advances to the ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championships in Austin, Texas, which will be held June 6-8.
HWS, ranked No. 7 in the nation, will compete in the Coed Dinghy National Championship for the 13th time since 1996. The top nine finishers in the Eastern and Western semifinals earned a spot in the national championship. Top-ranked Georgetown came away with the victory in the Eastern semifinal.
In the A Division, senior Sam Blouin, junior Catherine Pelo and senior Chris Klevan finished sixth. They were just one point shy of fifth place. HWS started out strong in the A Division, claiming two victories and a second place finish in their first three races. They registered a total of seven top five finishes in their 14 races.
Senior Austen Anderson and junior Bridget Nannig earned a fifth place finish in the B Division. The pair logged six top five finishes including one victory.
HWS recorded a total of 158 points, finishing just one point behind fifth place Old Dominion and two points shy of fourth place finishers, No. 2 Charleston.
William Smith sailors will be back on the water May 30-June 2 when they compete in the ICSA Women’s National Championship in Austin, Texas. The Herons earned a spot in the championship with a fifth place finish at MAISA Women’s Spring Dinghy Championship, May 21-22. HWS will also compete in the ICSA Team Race National Championship in Austin, Texas, June 3-5.
