Susan Bassett, director of William Smith Athletics, has been named as a member of the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for 2005.
Bassett will serve with Chris Jennings, vice president of Vance Metal Fabricators, Christine Clark, a 1983 William Smith graduate and maitre d'hotel for Geneva on the Lake, Dr. Joshua Kerlan, clinical director and proprietor of Prescription Fitness Physical Therapy and Sports Care, Brian Mader, vice president of operations at Zotos International, Robert Pass, regional community outreach and development manager for NYSEG, and Robert Schick, president and chief executive officer of Lyons National Bank.
Bassett has been William Smith director of athletics since 1995. Under her direction, the Herons have soared to unparalleled success.
The Heron Hall of Honor was inaugurated in October of 1997 with the induction of the Charter Class. Also under Bassett's guidance, the Heron Society membership giving has more than tripled since 1995.
A national powerhouse before her arrival, William Smith has continued its championship tradition during Bassett's tenure. The Herons have won two national championships since 1995 (Field Hockey 1997, 2000) and three ECAC Championships (Field Hockey 1999, Lacrosse 2001, Soccer 2003), as well as dozens of conference championships. In 2000, William Smith was recognized as one of the top athletic programs in the nation by Sports Illustrated for Women.
During her tenure, Bassett has played a major role to the improvement of Hobart and William Smith's athletics facilities. She led the way for the renovation of Winn-Seeley Gym and had a major part in the development of Cozzens Field, Bozzuto Boathouse, McCooey Field, the Smith Squash Center, as well as upgrades to locker rooms, the HWS Tennis Center, and the Hellstrom Boathouse.
She recently completed her term as chair of the NCAA Division III Management Council. A member of the Management Council since 1999, Bassett oversaw the development and passage of a wide sweeping reform package that was adopted during the 2004 NCAA Convention.
In October of 2003, Bassett was elected to the board of directors of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators.
A 1979 graduate of Ithaca College, she received a master's degree in physical education from Indiana University in 1980.
