The William Smith cross country team won the Cross Country Only Conference Championship for the third straight year on Saturday, Oct. 13. Senior Emily D’Addario defended her title, finishing first out of 144 runners on the 5-kilometer Seneca Lake State Park course.
D’Addario crossed the finish line in 18:52.08, besting her time of 19:00.64 from the 2011 CCOC Championships. D’Addario’s time is a new best since the first ever CCOC Championships in 2005. The Herons finished first out of 16 teams at the championship with 44 team points. Clarkson finished second with 51 points, and Hartwick took third with 76.
Junior Marielle Verni was the second Heron to finish the race, clocking a new personal-best 5k time of 20:02.24 for sixth place. Junior Maggie Nash finished eighth with a new season-best 5k time of 20:19.38. Sophomore Avery Share claimed 13th place and also logged a season-best 5k in 20:40.25, and sophomore Ellen Grenen rounded out the top five William Smith harriers. She recorded a career-best 5k time of 20:53.88 for 16th place.
The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they compete in the Wells Invitational. The women’s race is set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
