Statesmen Ground Golden Flyers

The Hobart College soccer team jumped out to a 3-0 lead just over 15 minutes in and then cruised to a 5-0 victory over Nazareth College in a non-league match played Tuesday, Oct. 17 on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation.

Four different Statesmen scored in the win. Senior Caetano Sanchez led Hobart (9-4-0) with two goals and an assist. Senior Alex Kittelberger notched a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Mike Lucas stopped the two shots he faced in the opening 73:58. First-year Tyler Serafine closed out the shutout playing the final 16:02 in goal. It’s the Statesmen’s sixth shutout this season.

Hobart started its scoring right away. Just 2:35 in, Kittelberger blasted a shot from about 25 yards out into the back of the net. He leads the Statesmen with seven goals and 16 points this fall. In the 12th minute, senior Will Abbot tallied his second goal of the year after a short pass in front from Sanchez. Senior Mike Moulton registered his first goal of the year after a feed from Kittelberger to make it 3-0 just 15:13 into the match.

In the 78th minute, first-year Jacob Fox pushed a pass ahead to Sanchez who broke by his defender and fired a shot past the keeper to stretch the Hobart lead to four. Just 1:14 later, Sanchez struck again in a strikingly similar fashion, breaking through the Nazareth defense for a one-on-one with the keeper. This time first-year Kyle Wiatrowski set up the play.

Nazareth’s best scoring opportunity came in the 63rd minute when Patrick Butigian broke through to just barely get a shot on goal, but Lucas was there to dive onto the ball. In the 83rd minute, the Golden Flyers earned back-to-back corners. They were unable to capitalize as Serafine punched away the first cross into the box, and the second attempt was immediately headed out.

Hobart finished with a 30-7 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edged in corners. Nazareth’s J.P. Horan stopped six shots in all 90 minutes in goal.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they host Union for a Liberty League match which is set to begin at 2 p.m. Prior to the game, the Statesmen Athletic Association will honor the 1992 Hobart Soccer team as a Team of Distinction.
