When Lisa Butler’s three sons were younger, she struggled to find books to hold their interest. “When I sat on the floor in libraries and book stores I discovered loads of great books for girls, but definitely not as many for boys. I was an English major at William Smith and I am the mom of three very fun boys, so I thought I’d give writing a try.”
Butler recently published her first children’s book, “Jake Jennings: Lacrosse Goalie,” written to engage the 2-5th grade reader. The book has been endorsed by George Wattles, a Division I lacrosse referee, and Steven Holmes, of Major League Lacrosse’s Denver Outlaws.
Illustrated by Jacquelyn Dale Whitman, an art student at the University of Chicago, “Jake Jennings: Lacrosse Goalie,” is the story of Jake Jennings, a wisecracking little brother who has a lot of funny stories to tell about the struggle for survival at the bottom of the family food chain. Jake has been watching his two older brothers live, eat, breathe, and, above all, play lacrosse ever since he can remember.
Finally, after years on the sidelines (except when being used for target practice in backyard games), his time to shine has come: his first official lacrosse season begins next week. Filled with visions of being a high-scoring hero gallantly leading his team to a championship, Jake should feel life is sweet. Unfortunately, one of his brothers, a stud lax goalie, has completely different plans for him.
“I see a lot of similarities between writing and athletics,” says Butler. “So many boys today have been playing organized sports since they were four, and they want to read about what’s relevant in their world. I discovered that of the books available, most were about football, basketball and baseball. I wanted to write about something different.”
At the Colleges, Butler majored in English, was on the sailing team and was a founding member of the William Smith Women’s Club Ice Hockey team. She lives in the heart of Philadelphia’s lacrosse country with her husband, Thomas, three sons and a dog.
