RecycleMania Going Strong

Hobart and William Smith entered its fifth year of RecycleMania, an eight week national recycling competition against 496 colleges and universities to increase student awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization. The competition began Feb. 3, and will end March 30. The Colleges’ goal this year is to reach a 35 percent recycling rate.

The Colleges started RecycleMania with the annual Sustainability Sweep on Monday, Feb. 11. Teams of up to four people gathered on the front steps of the Scandling Campus Center, and spent one hour hunting through campus to collect the most weight in recyclables. This year, the winning team snuck out with an astonishing 125 pounds of recyclables gathered in the one-hour sweep. The winners –Quincey Johnson ’16, Kai Schara ’16, Carter Brown ’15 and Megan VanDorp ’13 — received a $100 gift card to the Red Dove Tavern.

According to the RecycleMania website, the Colleges continue to make good progress toward their 35 percent goal. More Sweeps, Hall Crawls, and diversion events are planned for the remainder of the semester, and faculty, staff and students can contribute by thinking ahead to spring cleaning and requesting a blue recycling bag from The Colleges’ motto is: R3 to the Top: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

RecycleMania began in January 2001 as a challenge between Ohio University and Miami University, when the two recycling coordinators at the schools were looking for a way to motive their student bodies to recycle more. The two schools decided to take advantage of the existing sports rivalry and challenged each other to see who could recycle the most. Since then, this challenge has become a national competition, and has spread awareness greatly.

National recognition is provided to the winning school in each category on the RecycleMania website and in a national press release. Winning schools receive an award made out of recyclable materials, and win the right to host that category’s special traveling trophy for the coming year.
