Active Learning Workshop in Kiev

Last week Charles Temple, professor of education, was in Kiev, Ukraine, leading a six-day workshop on teaching for faculty from universities in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. The workshop had two strands, one focused on course planning, and the other on teaching a pre-designed course much like a First Year Seminar at HWS (but using readings tied to the theme of freedom and responsibility). Co-presenters in the workshop were Mary Melvin, from Miami University of Ohio; Howard Mould, from Deekens University in Melbourne, Australia; and David Carter, from the Civic Education Project in Budapest. The workshop was sponsored by George Soros' Open Society Institute in New York.
