Blanchard Presents at Berkshire Conference on the History of Women

Lara Blanchard, Henry Luce Assistant Professor of East Asian Art, recently presented a paper at the 13th Berkshire Conference on the History of Women at Scripps College in Claremont, Calif. Her paper, titled “The Song Dynasty Courtesan's Performance of Desire: Subjectivity and Representation in Chinese Poetry and Painting,” examined sources that give some insight into courtesans' roles in 10th- to 13th-century China and considered the problems inherent in reading textual and visual materials as literal representations of history. This material forms a part of a longer manuscript she is currently working on, tentatively titled “Figures of Longing and Desire in the Song Dynasty: Gender, Image and Meaning in Chinese Painting and Poetry.”
