The William Smith College soccer team is now ranked No. 9 in the nation after taking down the defending national champion Messiah College 1-0 on Saturday.
Sophomore Zoe Eth notched the game-winner against the Falcons and earned a spot on the Liberty League’s weekly honor roll for her effort. First-year Kara Shue leads William Smith and is tied for fourth in the league with six points on two goals and two assists. Junior MaryClaire Pelletier has chipped in two goals.
Senior Chelsea Dunay has played every minute in goal for the Herons. She earned her first shutout of the year after stopping five shots against Messiah. Dunay is sporting a .765 save percentage and a 1.33 goals against average.
The victory marks the first time the Herons have defeated Messiah College in six meetings between the teams. The past two regular season matchups have resulted in ties. In Messiah’s last 122 matches, the Falcons have only been shut out twice, both times by William Smith. Since 2005, Messiah has captured a total of five national championships and in 2010 and 2011 the Herons fell victim to the Falcons in the NCAA Semifinals.
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 14, when it hosts Rochester at 11 a.m. for the first match of the 2013 Upstate Collegiate Cup. The second match-up between Ithaca and Cortland will be played in Cortland at 11 a.m. The consolation and championship matches will take place in Geneva on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1:30 and 4 p.m., respectively.
