Two Hobart College student-athletes were recognized in the first round of weekly football awards from the Liberty League today. Senior Steven Webb was tabbed the Co-Offensive Performer of the Week and junior Troy Robinson received the Special Teams Performer of the Week award.
In the season-opening win at Dickinson, Webb rushed for a career-high 207 yards and three touchdowns, single-handedly outrushing the Red Devils by 80 yards and outscoring them 18-7. He was not brought down behind the line of scrimmage on any of his 19 carries Saturday, averaging 10.9 yards per rush. Webb took his second handoff of the day 51 yards to the house and also scored from, 1 and 14 yards out.
It’s the most rushing yards in a game by a Statesman since Doug Blakowski ’07 ran for 214 yards at Merchant Marine on Oct. 14, 2006. Webb’s per carry average was the highest by a Hobart player since Jack Holleran ’05 averaged 11.4 against Dickinson on Sept. 14, 2002. Saturday marked Webb’s ninth career 100-yard rushing game and third in a row. It was also the fifth time he’s scored a career-high three touchdowns in a game.
Robinson averaged a league-best 13.8 yards per punt return against the Red Devils. His six punt returns helped the Statesmen to an average starting field position of their own 31. Robinson’s 35-yard return in the third quarter allowed Hobart to start its second possession of the second half at midfield. He also caught two passes for 30 yards.
Ranked No. 7 in the nation in the first D3football.com poll of the season, Hobart (1-0) is off this week. The Statesmen will make their 2013 Boswell Field debut on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they host Utica (1-0). The Homecoming game is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m.
