Herons Win Upstate Collegiate Cup

The No. 9 William Smith College soccer team scored in the 30th minute to defeat No. 5 Ithaca College in the championship match of the 2013 Upstate Collegiate Cup this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Herons improve to 4-1-0 overall, and the Bombers (4-1-0) suffered their first loss of the season.

William Smith topped No. 25 Rochester 3-0 yesterday on Cozzens Field to earn a spot in the championship match. While the Bombers downed Cortland 3-0 in their first round match-up in Cortland, N.Y. The Red Dragons edged the Yellowjackets 3-2 in double overtime this afternoon in the consolation match.

Heron first-year Ella McMackin made an almost instant contribution, scoring her first collegiate goal at 29:40, just over a minute after she was subbed into the game. Junior MaryClaire Pelletier sent a cross right in front of the goal to find McMackin at the right post. McMackin sent her shot right into the corner of the net for what proved to be the game-winner.

The Herons controlled the momentum for most of the match, out-shooting the Bombers 17-8. William Smith also held a 3-2 advantage in corners. Ithaca’s best scoring opportunity came with just over seven minutes left in the match. After a Heron foul, the Bombers were awarded a free kick just off the right corner of the box. Anna Gray took the kick, but her attempt was immediately punched away by senior goalie Chelsea Dunay. Gray collected the ball and took a follow-up shot that sailed wide right of the goal. The Bombers were on the offensive in the final seconds, and Amanda Callanan tried to fire a shot with 15 seconds remaining, but it was blocked by a Heron defender.

Dunay played all 90 minutes, making four saves and securing her second shutout of the season. Beth Coppolecchia played all 90 minutes in goal for Ithaca and finished with seven saves.

The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they travel to take on Fredonia in another non-league match at 2 p.m. The Bombers will host Hartwick on Saturday, Sept. 21 for an Empire 8 match at noon.
