GENEVA — Susan Bassett, former William Smith College Director of Athletics, has been named among 10 members of the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2005.
She will be inducted along with nine other former Bombers on Oct. 7.
Bassett, who graduated from Ithaca in 1979, started her new job as the athletics director at Carnegie Mellon University on July 1. The move to Pittsburgh is the latest stop in an exceptional career in collegiate athletics that includes 13 years as a head coach of swimming and diving at William Smith and Union colleges, and a decade as director of athletics for the Herons.
As a coach, Bassett mentored 114 All-Americans, won three state championships, and became the second woman to lead both a men’s team and a women’s team to top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championship Meet in the same year. She was named the 1993 NCAA Division III Women’s Coach of the Year.
Bassett’s administrative career is highlighted by four national championships (two in field hockey and two in sailing), several capital projects that placed the Herons at the forefront of collegiate athletic facilities, and the addition of three varsity sports: golf, sailing and squash.
She served on the NCAA Management Council from 1999 through 2004, including a year as committee chair.
As a student-athlete, Bassett played one season for the Bombers before injuries suffered in an automobile accident cut short her playing career.
