Denning ’94 Launches Athlett®

CogSports, Inc., (The Center for Cognitive Sports Performance) co-founded by M. Jordan Denning ’94 recently launched The Athlett®, a new psychometric tool that identifies key mental and behavioral traits for athletic success. This profiling system has been adopted by the U.S Naval War College and measures character traits necessary to excel in leadership positions.

According to the company’s press release, “Though a significant portion of sports performance is physical in nature, success is also highly dependent on mental toughness, self and team leadership, and player/coach cohesion. It is not enough to be the fastest, biggest, or toughest athlete on the field or in the competition. Players must individually exhibit character, resiliency and emotional intelligence. And successful teams must become a cohesive unit willing to put the group before self.”

CogSports develops cutting-edge proprietary tools that identify, measure and address such factors in athletes and teams as character and ethics, emotional intelligence, hardiness, resiliency, leadership, and mental toughness, among others. These traits are measured through a mix of more than 30 attributes that include stress management, emotional control, self-confidence, perseverance and decisiveness. The company’s staff then provides training, support and ongoing consultation to identify attributes and to address and improve upon results.

ATHLETT® is an online test, completed in 15 minutes or less, which allows an athlete, coach or organization to quickly identify key areas of strength and weakness. CogSports then offers a professional evaluation of the results to identify specific areas for improvement. A program of targeted training exercises to build leadership and teamwork skills is also made available. Over time, with appropriate training, the ATHLETT® is designed to measure improvement in these character, ethics and leadership attributes.

Denning earned his B.A. in English from Hobart College. As a student, he was a member of the basketball team, serving as captain in his senior year. He was also a member of the soccer team, a Chi Phi brother and served on the interfraternity council.
