‘Todd’ gets good review

The Geneva Theatre Guild's weekend production of Stephen Sondheim's “Sweeney Todd,” received an enthusiastic review in the July 15 Finger Lakes Times from Diana L. Smith.

Appearing “skilfully” in the title role was Robert Cowles, chair of the HWS Music Department. He has conducted at the Colleges since 1992 and is the artistic director of the Syracuse Vocal Ensemble.

Cowles was the award-winning music director for GTG’s “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” two years ago.

Smith also praised director Steve Duprey, saying he had “a magical mind;” and the artistic and mammorth set designs.

Making his GTG debut was Jefferson McDonald, a nephew of film and television actor Christopher McDonald, a 1977 graduate of Hobart College. Smith noted that the young actor's performance “will take you on a journey from innocence to the school of hard knocks.”

“Sweeney Todd” was presented July 15-17 at the Smith Opera House in downtown Geneva.
