“Morning Joe” Quotes Gearan

President Mark D. Gearan was quoted on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” as part of a discussion about recent media coverage of problems with the website for “Obamacare,” the Affordable Care Act. Hosted by Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski and Willie Geist, the episode on Tuesday, Dec. 3, also featured as guests Jim VandeHei, president and CEO of Politico, and Jon Meacham, executive editor and executive vice president at Random House. The panelists discussed a campaign expected to be rolled out by the White House sometime on Tuesday “to return attention to why the Affordable Care Act passed in the first place,” according to the show’s website.

Following conversations around how and why the media chooses to cover particular stories – and why it has been choosing not to put the Obamacare story first of late – Scarborough noted, “I guarantee you Americans are more concerned this morning about our dropping education standards than the latest follow up on a story they’ve been hearing about for months.”

Meacham replied, “On the inside, this is the virtue of a short attention span. They’ve lived through the vices of our obsession. I think it was Mark Gearan, the former Clinton communications guy, who said ‘The White House Press Corps is like the kids at a soccer game: they just chase the ball.’ And so we’ve chased the ball and now we’re going to chase another.”

The full discussion can be seen on the Morning Joe website.
