Professors participate in Africa Public Service Day

Two members of the HWS faculty — George Joseph, professor of French and Francophone Studies; and Thelma Pinto, director of Self-Instructional Lanugage Program and instructor in Africana Studies — participated in the Africa Public Service Day in Cape Town, South Africa on June 23.

Five different sites across the country were linked by satellite, and Joseph and Pinto spoke from the Parliament building in Cape Town.

The day's theme was “The Role of the State in the Reconstruction of Africa.” Pinto spoke on the role of the state in shaping the nature of international aid it receives; Joseph spoke on the importance of maintaining human rights in an atmosphere of tightened security.
