Ice Skating Rink Opens

As the spring semester gets underway, the Student Activities Board is gearing up for a number of fun activities to welcome students back to campus. Part of the excitement will include the opening of the ice skating rink on Bristol Lawn.

The activities at the rink are set to kickoff with the “Skating Under the Lights” event at 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24. The event, which is part of the “HWS After Dark Series,” will offer students and faculty the opportunity to lace up their skates while enjoying music, hot chocolate and good company.

“The ice rink is a great way for students to take advantage of the winter months in the Finger Lakes,” says Assistant Director of Student Activities Jessie Marullo. “It provides an opportunity for students to get outside and have fun whether they are watching or skating.”

In addition, the ice rink will serve as the centerpiece for the second annual HWS Winterpalooza festival from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1. The winter-themed festival, which is open to everyone, will feature a number of activities including a mechanical snowboard, an ice sculpting demonstration, live music, horse drawn carriage rides and a winter cookout.

“Students absolutely loved Winterpalooza last year,” Marullo says. “This year, our goal is to build upon the success from last year and get even more students involved.”

Immediately following the outdoor festivities, attendees can make their way into the Vandervort Room to cap off the night with a performance by comedian Mike Super, sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.

The fun on the ice will continue throughout the month of February with open skate sessions from 6 – 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, and from 12 to 4 p.m. on most Saturdays.

Students have the option of either bringing their own skates or borrowing a pair provided by Student Activities.
