David Ost, an HWS professor of political science, has an article published in the Sept. 12, 2005,issue of “The Nation” magazine.
“Solidarity, 25 Years Later,” his essay is a reflection on Poland's Solidarity movement, the trade union that came into being after a general strike in Gdansk. Aug. 31 marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the accord that legalized Solidarity.
In December 1981, the government declared martial law and outlawed the movement, but Solidarity eventually came to power during East Europe's year of transformation, 1989.
Ost, who joined the faculty in 1986, holds a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his bachelor's from SUNY-Stony Brook.
