Spates’ new book available

“The Imperfect Round: Helen Gill Viljoen's Life of Ruskin,” by James L. Spates, professor of anthropology/sociology, is now available at the College Store.

The book offers 21st century students of Ruskin a review of the remarkable biographic work of Helen Viljoen at a critical point in Ruskin scholarship, and also provides astute insights into her life as a dedicated scholar.

Spates joined the Colleges faculty in 1971 as an assistant professor of sociology, was promoted to associate professor in 1977 and to professor in 1982. His master's and doctorate are from Boston University; his undergraduate degree is from Colby College in Maine.
