The William Smith College golf team played its first match of the spring season on the first day of spring, finishing fourth in the Myrtle Beach Shootout on the par 72 Norman Course at the Barefoot Golf Resort.
Junior Kara Capstraw returned from a semester studying in Ireland to lead the Herons, producing a round of 95 on the 5,817-yard layout. She finished in a three-way tie for eighth place in the 27-golfer field. Classmate Liz Semelsberger also returned from a semester abroad and finished in a four-way tie that also included first-year Madeline Dietz for 17th place. Both Herons shot a 102. First-year Whitney Reynolds was one shot back in 21st place to complete William Smith’s team score.
Denison University won the team title behind individual medalist Carly Schultz’s five-over 77. The Big Red posted a team score of 347, 33 strokes better than runner-up McDaniel College. NAIA school Doane (Neb.) College was third at 390 followed by the Herons (402) and Hamilton College (406).
William Smith’s next tournament is the Vassar Invitational, April 12-13, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
