The Hobart rowing team recently returned from its spring break training trip to Lake Anna, Va. The trip was capped off with a scrimmage against the University of Virginia.
Lake Anna is a new training location for the Statesmen. The squad rowed out of Lake Anna State Park.
“Lake Anna is a great spot to train,” Head Coach Paul Bugenhagen said. “We are in close proximity to Charlottesville so our week ending scrimmage with Virginia was an easy trip. The lake also has many protected coves that make finding calm rowable water easy.”
The team trained twice daily in Virginia.
“This is the deepest team I have had the pleasure of coaching,” Bugenhagen said. “The competition during the selection process was fierce. I am excited to return to Geneva and kick off our spring racing season.”
The Statesmen did get a respite from two-a-days on Thursday afternoon when the team held a cook out on the lake and enjoyed the sunny, Southern weather. Following the relaxing afternoon, Hobart headed to Charlottesville for a scrimmage with UVa.
“I want to thank Coach Frank Biller and the Virginia squad for great hospitality and some very competitive racing,” Bugenhagen said. “It is great to be able to knock heads with someone else before the racing season begins. Virginia is a fast and talented team and provided tough racing for our entire squad.”
The Statesmen begin their season on Saturday, March 29 when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to race Ithaca College for the Statesmen Trophy.
