The Hobart College rowing team’s varsity eight was selected as the Liberty League Men’s Rowing Boat of the Week on Monday by the conference office. The Statesmen were very impressive in their first official weekend of spring racing, capturing the gold medal at the Knecht Cup.
In Saturday’s opening heat, Sam Zuckerman, Joe Biesemeyer, Robert McNamara, August Wherry, Brett Lawhon, Davis Muller, Patrick Ware, Milos Milosavljevic, and W. Hunter Holtz progressed to the semifinals with a winning time of 5:57.02, 7.72 seconds faster than the runner-up from Marist. In the afternoon, Hobart won its semifinal with a time of 5:54.02, 7.74 seconds ahead of second place Bucknell, to reach Sunday’s grand final.
In the finale, the race for gold came down to Hobart and No. 19 Drexel on the Mercer Lake course. The Statesmen pulled away down the stretch, prevailing in a time of 5:57.35, enjoying an impressive 4.7-second margin over the Dragons.
This was the eighth consecutive year the Statesmen have competed in the Knecht Cup. It’s the first time Hobart has won a gold medal in the varsity eight following a silver medal in 2013 and bronze medals in 2009 and 2006.
The Statesmen are back in action on Saturday, April 19, when they race Bucknell and Holy Cross in Princeton, N.J.
