William Smith College sophomore Hannah Connolly and junior Katie Sipple combined for 13 points as the Heron lacrosse team cruised to a 13-6 Liberty League win at RIT on Saturday afternoon. Connolly notched five goals and three assists, while Sipple produced three goals and two assists.
The Herons improve to 7-7 overall and 7-1 in the Liberty League. The Tigers fall to 4-9 and 1-6.
Sophomore Kate Byrne logged two goals and an assist and sophomore Meg Hannan chipped in two goals. Sophomore Emy Stratton earned two assists, picked up four ground balls and caused four turnovers. Sophomore Geneva Calder and junior Rachel Hughes each recorded four ground balls. Calder also won three draws while Hughes posted four caused turnovers and three draws. First-year Sarah Honan played all 60 minutes and registered a career-high 15 saves.
Corrina Mandell scored twice and picked up a game-high seven ground balls for RIT. Nicole Bingo and Sage Sarkis added a goal and an assist. Holly Leone chipped in a goal and won three draws. Caitlin Conway played all 60 minutes in goal for the Tigers and stopped 10 shots.
Mandell struck first for RIT just 45 seconds in, but the Herons answered with five straight goals. The run started with back-to-back goals by Connolly. Byrne and Sipple found the back of the net before Connolly chipped in her third of the afternoon to make it 5-1 with 12:58 left in the first half. Just twenty-nine seconds later, Sarkis notched her 45th goal of the season and Mariah Hettel followed with her fifth of the year to make it 5-3 with 4:46 left in the half. With 1:12 before the break, Hannan fired home a shot after a feed from Stratton for a woman-up goal to give William Smith a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Connolly stretched the Heron lead to four with her fourth goal of the day 35 seconds into the second half. Mandell connected for her second of the day to make it 4-7, but Connolly struck again with 18:39 on the clock. She lead William Smith with 28 goals this season. At 14:06, Leone cut the Tigers’ deficit back to three at 8-5, but the Herons scored the next four goals. Sipple registered back-to-back tallies both coming off feeds from Connolly then Sipple set up Byrne and Hannan followed with an unassisted tally to make it 12-5 with 6:46 remaining. Sipple leads the Herons with 19 assists this year. With 5:47 on the clock, Bingo scored for RIT, but first-year Allie Flaherty found the back of the net with 2:51 left for the final.
The Herons finished with a 31-23 advantage in shots, while the Tigers held a 40-26 lead in ground balls. RIT recorded a slight 11-10 edge in draws. William Smith was successful on all but two clear attempts (25-for-27), and the Tigers finished 16 of 24 clear attempts.
The Herons, who have clinched a spot in the Liberty League tournament, will be back in action on Saturday, April 26, when they host Union for their final Liberty League and regular season game at 5 p.m. William Smith, the Dutchwomen and RPI are all still battling for the top three spots in the Liberty League tournament.
