The HWS campus is resonating with school spirit as the Statesmen and Herons kick off season’s end in high gear, taking part in several major sporting events and celebrations throughout the weekend.
In lacrosse, the Statesmen will face off against St. Joseph’s University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at Boswell Field. At halftime, Hobart College Statesmen Athletic Association will announce the newest Hobart Teams of Distinction, honoring the 1983, 1984, and 1985 national championship-winning Statesmen lacrosse teams.
Later in the day, William Smith lacrosse will take on Union in the Herons’ last game of the spring before the Liberty League Tournament. The game will be held at 5 p.m. at Boswell Field.
Off the field, HWS athletics also has much to celebrate on Saturday. Honoring the achievements of the 2013 Division III National Champion William Smith soccer team, the Herons will gather for a banquet on Saturday, April 26, to celebrate their legendary season.
As the campus rallies around the Statesmen and Herons at home, several teams are also heading into championships and tournaments on the road.
The HWS sailing team will travel to King’s Point, N.Y., to compete for the America Trophy. The team has won the event seven times, and will race Saturday and Sunday.
In addition, both men’s and women’s rowing will travel to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., to race in the Liberty League Championships on Sunday, April 27.
The William Smith golf team will participate in the Liberty League Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Bernardston, Mass. And, Statesmen golf will attend the Oswego State Spring Invitational, with Athlete of the Week Dillon Sass ’14 and fellow senior Ben Ayres ’14 poised to lead the Statesmen.
The Hobart and William Smith tennis teams also will travel to compete against Vassar, and Rensselaer, respectively.
Following the weekend of excitement, the Colleges will host The Block H Awards, a banquet honoring Hobart Athletics, which will be held on Monday, April 28. The dinner will feature two new awards: the Statesmen Scholar-Athlete Award and the Hanna Award for Excellence.
