Coinciding with Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the HWS campus will host “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” an internationally organized event that raises awareness about sexual assault.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 2, with participants asked to gather at the steps of Coxe Hall. Members of the HWS and local community are invited to participate. Registration is $5.
Many reports show that 1 in 4 women will experience a sexual assault, and the committee members want to recognize that sexual assault/domestic violence does not only happen to women and wants everyone in the community to participate.
At “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” a representative of Safe Harbors, local rape crisis and domestic violence advocacy group, will offer opening remarks. The walk around campus will follow the introduction.
In addition, an HWS theatre class, guided by Associate Professor of Theatre Heather May, has put together a 15-minute presentation addressing sexual harassment.
Following the walk there will be a barbecue on the Quad (weather permitting) and students will be able to use their meal cards to swipe in.
Participants can register as teams or individually. The first 100 people that sign up for the walk will receive a free T-shirt. Students are encouraged to bring their own shoes to walk in, but do have some to lend out and participants are not required to wear the high heels if they are uncomfortable.
