The 17th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team recorded its fifth shutout of the year enroute to a 2-0 Liberty League win over St. Lawrence this afternoon. First-year Hannah Wood led the Herons with a game-high 3 points.
In the first half, Wood took the ball off a defender’s stick, made a second defender miss and deked the goalie before firing her 11th goal of the season into the back of the net. In the 42nd minute Wood picked up her third assist on the year when she sent a ball cross cage to sophomore Alessandra Patrizio who buried a shot to give William Smith (6-3, 1-1) the 2-0 lead.
Senior Catherine Hare got the start for William Smith posting her fourth shutout of the year. Julia Hudson started in net for the Saints (3-6, 0-2) making six saves.
The Herons dominated the score sheet out shooting St. Lawrence 18-2 and gaining six penalty corners to none for the Saints.
William Smith returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 1 when they host Ithaca in a non-league match. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
