Donor Wall Honors Cook Family, Parent Giving

In recognition of the generous and longstanding support of Honorary Trustee Langdon (Lang) L.H.D. ’12 and Lyn Cook P’99, P’05, the parents of Hobart alums Whitney Cook ’99 and Freddy Cook ’05, Hobart and William Smith Colleges President Mark D. Gearan recently dedicated The Cook Parents Circle Donor Wall.

Located in the Scandling Campus Center, The Cook Parents Circle Donor Wall honors and celebrates non-alum parents who have made giving a priority at the Colleges. The donor wall was unveiled at the State of the Colleges address during Homecoming and Family Weekend. In 2012, the Cook Circle was established in honor of the Cook family to encourage non-alum parents to remain engaged with HWS long after their child graduates.

“For nearly 20 years, the Cooks have been stalwart supporters of Hobart and William Smith,” Gearan said. “They have demonstrated a confidence in our strategic priorities and have inspired other parents to invest in supporting those priorities. We thank you, and other parents like you, who continue to make the Colleges a philanthropic priority.”

Gearan said support from the Cooks and many other parents and families have benefited the Colleges in significant ways. Their generosity will have a lasting impact on future generations of students, he said.

At the State of the Colleges, Lang and Lyn joined Gearan on stage to share remarks about the newly unveiled The Cook Parents Circle Donor Wall and the importance of parent giving. The Cooks are responsible for one of the largest donations to HWS from non-alum parents.

“Twenty years ago, we had no idea that we’d become lifetime members of the Hobart and William Smith community,” Lang said.

He said the idea of community resonates at the Colleges and that it is community which continues to build strong bonds for parents and families.

“As the young adult builds a connection with HWS, the relationship with the parents and the Colleges also grows,” Lang said. “As parents, we have every bit as much at stake as alumni and alumnae.”

All members of The Cook Parents Circle are invited to special events each year. Lifetime Members’ names are recognized permanently on campus.
