HWS Regatta Honors Arnoff ’82

In memory of the late David Lee Arnoff ’82, a loyal Hobart alum and passionate sailor, the HWS Fall Regatta has been renamed the David Lee Arnoff Regatta in his honor. The HWS sailing team recently gathered with members of the Arnoff family, who are establishing the David Lee Arnoff Endowment Fund, for a special dinner event earlier this month to celebrate the inaugural Regatta held on Seneca Lake. “It’s very, very special, and words can’t define what we feel to have the Regatta named in his honor,” said Ro Arnoff P’82, David’s mother. “By having his name associated with something he loved, we hope that it encourages future students to continue studying and doing the things they love as David did.” David graduated from Hobart in 1982 with a B.A. in political science and went on to lead a career in transportation logistics, focusing on train locomotion and the management of its systems. He was a sailor at HWS before a varsity sailing team was established, fostering his passion for sailing through the HWS club sailing team. Ro explains that David “wanted to attend a small academic college that offered in addition to a fine liberal arts education, the things he loved, which were sailing and being in sea country.” Hobart was the perfect fit. While a student at HWS, David’s parents were chairs of the HWS Parents Executive Committee and helped with fundraising efforts for the Colleges. Since then, Ro says they’ve stayed involved with the Colleges and kept their interest in HWS sailing alive. “Through the years we’ve paid attention to HWS sailing, and we think there’s great things on the horizon for HWS sailing, both this year and in years to come,” Ro said.  Hoping to remember David and carry on his passion for sailing, David’s wife and parents created an endowment that will “honor him as a friend, brother, husband, and son.” The endowment will support the HWS sailing program and the annual David Lee Arnoff Regatta which will be held on Seneca Lake each year. “As we were trying to figure out what to do to remember this amazing, fun-loving, generous person, it was important that we did something that carried on something he was passionate about,” said David’s wife, Melissa Arnoff. “We’re so pleased that we were able to do this regatta, we wanted to have something that was celebratory not sad, because that wasn’t David.” Head Sailing Coach Scott Iklé presented the family with a trophy at the dinner that will hang in the boat house in David’s honor to serve as a reminder that “dedication, passion, and friendship” are important in all endeavors, both on and off the water. “We all share Dave’s passion for sailing and his dedication to the Colleges that unite us,” Iklé said. “But friendship defines us and this weekend we will recognize a true friend of the Hobart and William Smith Sailing team.” The Inaugural David Lee Arnoff Regatta was held on Saturday, Oct. 11. Sailing in David’s honor, the HWS sailing team captured first place out of 14 teams in both the A and B divisions. “It’s been the HWS regatta since I was here, so it’s really nice to finally have a name for the regatta,” said Liana Folger ’15, a team captain. “It was definitely more meaningful to have it in someone’s name, especially David who had such a love for sailing.”
